• “The Religious and Political Crisis of Europe: Negotiations in Westphalia, 1644”

As the destructive conflicts that ravaged 17th-century Europe for years were coming to an uncertain end, the future of the continent was waiting to be rewritten at the negotiating table. What began as religious disagreements turned into the Thirty Years’ War, which is one of the most devastating conflicts in European history. Following this great catastrophe, caused by the deep religious polarization between Catholic and Protestant states, our committee will gather to build a lasting European order.

This major crisis, driven by religious reasons damaged the stability of Holy Roman Empire, and intensified conflict between major powers on the continent, such as France, Sweden, Spain, and Austria, and turned into an international power struggle.

Within this committee, delegates will gather not only to resolve conflicts or redraw borders. They will gather in this historical crisis committee also to make decisions that will shape the understanding of sovereignty and the future of diplomacy. Whether the continent will achieve stable order or will be driven into further chaos will depend on the delegates’ strategies.

Delegates will negotiate in Westphalia, which will be the first comprehensive and multilateral diplomatic effort in history, and they will take the great responsibility of establishing a new European order that will endure for centuries.
